Survival of the Selfish

divyagulati2869

Life is highly unfair. There is no need also for it to be fair if our existence is a result of a series of random events. Nevertheless, then, why does our brain have a measure of fairness? Why am I evolved this way? Why I feel upset over the unfairness that is entrusted on to me? Evolutionarily, as a species, we decided to stick in large social groups and share our rewards. Researchers have found that this sense is heightened in species that cooperate outside the bonds of kinship and mating. This hints that as reliance on cooperation increases, the risk of this reliance failing increases, as it can be at any moment when the individual decides to be selfish. To perceive such threats, we evolved a sense of fairness. But guess what? Some people failed to evolve, which is why unfairness prevails in today’s world. And you and I take the burnt of it.

  • Never

  • I have lost count

  • Sometimes
